What is Drip edge?
Drip edge is a small component with an outsized effect on the service life of a roof edge. Without it, water clings to the underside of the shingle and wicks back onto the fascia and the edge of the roof deck, producing the rot commonly found behind gutters on older homes. Current roofing practice and most codes call for drip edge at eaves and rakes, installed under the underlayment at the rake and over it at the eave. Inspectors frequently find it absent on older roofs or on reroofs where the installer economised, and it is worth reporting because it cannot be added later without disturbing the roof edge.
