What is ASHI?
The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) is one of the longest-established professional bodies in the field. Its Standard of Practice defines what a general home inspection covers, what it excludes, and how findings should be described; many state licensing laws are written against it or something closely modelled on it. For inspectors, the practical relevance is that the Standard sets the defensible boundary of the inspection — it is what you point to when asked why a buried drain line or a sealed wall cavity was not evaluated. Membership also carries continuing-education and ethics requirements. ASHI is frequently referenced alongside InterNACHI, and some inspectors hold credentials from both.
